Royal Naval Dockyard

Bermuda has a long association with the British Royal Navy, and after the American Revolution (1775 to 1783), was the Royal Navy's main base in the Western hemisphere, gaining the nickname the "Gibraltar of the West". During the 19th century, Bermuda for example served as the staging post for British attacks on Baltimore and Washington D.C. during the war of 1812 (the attack on Washington D.C. was of course the inspiration for the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner"). It was during this period that the Royal Navy extensively improved the harbour, dockyards and other naval facilities in Bermuda, and beginning in 1816, the Royal Navy Dockyard was fortified against possible US attacks.

In both World Wars, Bermuda itself (and of course many Bermudians) continued to play an important role in supporting the British and Allied war effort. However, following World War II, the Royal Naval Dockyard was closed, and the last British supply base (HMS Malabar) closed in 1995.

Today, the Royal Naval Dockyard has become perhaps Bermuda's most popular tourist attraction. It is located at the tip of Ireland Island, and contains a shopping mall, restaurants, an arts center, a craft market, and the Bermuda Maritime Museum (which is located in the Keep at the Dockyard). There are many exhibits illustrating Bermuda's history, not to mention historic buildings, and thus plenty to see and do in the area.
